Belling the Cat

The new farm cat was such a ferocious hunter that the mice were afraid to stick their noses out of their holes. At their wits end and very hungry, they gathered to discuss their predicament. They sat in silence until a bold young mouse stood up and said, “I have an idea!”

“This cat is so quiet and sneaky; she pounces before we have any chance to escape. I propose that we find a bell and attach it around her neck so we’ll always know just where she is.”

The others thought this was a wonderful plan. “Hooray for the smart young mouse,” they cried.

“It sounds good,” said the oldest and wisest among them. ”Just tell me, please. Who is going to bell the cat?”

The young mouse didn’t say a word. And neither did anyone else.

Some things are easier said than done.
