Mercury and the woodsman

A poor woodsman was working on the bank of a river when his axe fell into the water. Mercury – the God of Trade – heard the man’s lament and appeared to ask the cause of his distress. When the woodsman explained what had happened Mercury dove into the river and returned with a golden axe.

“Is this what you lost?” he asked.

“No, that is not mine,” said the woodsman.

Mercury went back into the water and brought out a silver axe. “Surely this is yours?”

The woodsman shook his head. "You are very kind, but no.”

Once more Mercury went into the river, and this time he retrieved the woodman’s own axe, which he claimed with many heartfelt thanks. The god was so moved by the man’s honesty, he made him a gift of the gold and silver axes and the woodman never again wanted for bread.

Honesty is the best policy.
