The Fox and the Crow

A hungry fox spotted a crow sitting above him on a tree, a large and tempting piece of cheese in her beak.

“That's just what I want,” thought the fox, “And I am going to have it.”

“Good morning, Mistress Crow,” he cried. “I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful you look today; your eyes so bright and keen, your feathers so black and glossy. However do you manage it?”

The crow looked down and nodded to the fox, who continued, “Yours must be the loveliest of all birdsongs. If you would sing one little song, I will tell everyone that I have heard The Queen of the Birds.”

The crow lifted her head and began to caw. Of course the moment she opened her mouth, the cheese fell and to the ground and the fox had his breakfast.

Never trust a flatterer.
