Two frogs lived in a lush green marsh with plenty of bugs to eat and wonderful places to hide from foxes and hawks. But one summer, a drought dried up the marsh and the frogs were forced to move.
They hopped a long thirsty distance without finding a new home, but at last they picked up the scent of fresh water and followed it to a well. One frog hopped up to the rim and declared, “Finally, a cool wet place to call home. All we have to do is jump in.”
“Not so fast,” said the other, as he peered down into the deep, dark shaft. “It’s quite a way from here to the water down there,” he said. “If the well ever dries up like our marsh did, how on earth would we get out?”
