The Grasshopper and the Ant

One fine summer day, the grasshopper was singing and dancing in the bright sunshine.

When the ant passed by with a load of corn on her back, the grasshopper said, “You’re wasting a perfect afternoon. Sit down and relax.”

“Heavens, no,” said the ant. “Cold days and nights will be here before you know it. You should be working like me and filling your larder.”

“Fiddle-dee-dee,” said the grasshopper. “I have plenty to eat and the weather is beautiful.”

On as snowy night a few months later, the ant heard a knock on her door.

The shivering grasshopper pleaded, “Wise ant, can you spare me a few kernels to eat? I’ve had nothing all day and I’m feeling faint.”

The ant shook her head. “It’s your own fault. Maybe next year you’ll take my advice.”

There is a time to work and a time to play.
