The Hawk and the Nightingale

A nightingale sat in the branches of a tall oak tree when a hawk heard her song and swooped down, seizing her in his talons.

The nightingale begged for her life. “I am such a small creature,” she said, “not nearly enough to satisfy the hunger of so great a bird as yourself. You would be better off pursuing bigger game with more meat on its bones.”

The hawk shook his head. “I would be a fool to let go of a morsel in my grasp for the sake of a meal that is not even within sight.”

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
