A milkmaid was walking to market with a pail of milk on her head, her mind filled with plans for what to do with the money she would get for its sale.
She decided that she would buy herself some chickens, who would lay many eggs. With the profit from the eggs she would be able to get herself a pretty new dress to wear to the dance at the county fair where all the handsome young men would argue over who would be the first to dance with her.
She thought to herself, “But I will laugh and send them about their business with a toss of my head.”
Imagining herself surrounded by all those dashing fellows, she did just that and... crash! The pail fell to the ground; the milk was gone and with it the chickens, the eggs, her pretty dress and all the handsome suitors.
Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.
